Wetland rehabilitation project at Dunaway Gardens

Since abandonment of this bottomland area of the property, significant degradation of the ecosystem by beaver has occurred. It is now a mosaic of open water areas impounded by numerous beaver dams, with scattered plots of emergent or scrub-shrub vegetation. It is our desire to conduct ecological restoration activities to enhance usage by both wildlife and visitors to the garden.

Restorative activities include removal of accumulated sediments and woody debris from Cedar Creek as well as excavation of the original watercourse. This course will follow the historic path of Cedar Creek; effectively splitting creek flow through the site. Materials excavated will be placed alongside the channels to create a low berm that will be used to regulate water levels in the area located between the creek channels. In this area, excavated materials will be mounded to create waterfowl nesting islands. Water, marsh and waterfowl plants (and other appropriate flora) will be planted throughout the area. The wetlands will be accessible via walking trails on the berms. A wildlife viewing tower is planned. An adjunct to this will be connection to the 4 county corridor walking and bicycle trails through the woods. This wetland will be a destination point for these corridors. The above activities have been permitted via Army Corps of Engineers.
